I watched helplessly, as the images overwhelmed me. Images of blood, torture and death at the hands of the vampires. It lasted only moments, but when the visions took over, I was transported to different places and times. It was like I was actually there. “Alexis!” The images vanished and I was snapped back to reality. My great uncle James sat in front on me, in the small parlor, looking annoyed. He knew exactly what was happening to me, it was part of my powers, being sent visions of threats, past and present, yet he acted like I did it deliberately to avoid his lectures. If I could control them, I would. They struck without warning, most of them indecipherable, leaving me reeling afterwards. I rubbed my temples trying to focus. It’s a wonder I haven’t lost my mind yet. “Blood of my blood, it is almost time to be inducted into the Anuri clan. As Priestess you will hold our sacred knowledge inside you. You will move to the reserve after the ceremony and guards will be appointed to keep you safe.” And there it was. The rest of my life mapped out as a priestess. The title meant nothing, I was nothing more than a loyal servant, there to work for the good of the clan. I wasn’t even allowed to marry or have children. It was a lot to put on anyone’s shoulders, but I was only eighteen. “Yes, Uncle James. How long before the ceremony?” “When the full moon rises. Six days from now.” He checked his pocket watch, getting to his feet with the help of his silver tipped cane. It was a mark of his rank rather than an actual walking aid. The silver, of course, was to protect against vampires. The scourge of our world. I stood too. “I’ll be ready.” When he left the room, I let out a frustrated breath. Six days! That’s all I had left. That was nothing. Most priestesses didn’t take on their role until their early twenties, as they only inherited the knowledge of eighteen. I was different. I had very little memory of that day in the cornfield, the day the previous priestess gifted me with the clan knowledge. I was only thirteen. According to my aunt, I spent weeks in bed, bombarded with visions as my brain tried to process everything. Feeling boxed in, I left the farmhouse and headed outside to the yard. The hot July sun beat down on me. It felt good. Looking out across the fields, I was tempted to just start running and never look back. I’ve lived my whole life under scrutiny. Even after my parents died and I came here, the clan were still watching me. I’ve never done anything a teenage girl should. I’ve never had a drink or been with a boy. I’ve never sneaked out of the house to go to a party. I knew this day was coming though, so I had no one to blame but myself. I wasn’t brave enough to break the rules, but now, faced with a deadline, I knew I had to do something. It was early evening, my aunt was in town, visiting a friend. She wasn’t part of the Anuri, she didn’t understand my role, but James made it clear early on, that while I would live here with her, I would be taught the ways of the clan in preparation to join them. What could I do that’s impulsive? I wondered. There was nothing to do out here. Which meant going into town, some five or six miles away. My uncle’s truck was parked by the barn, Aunt Rachel never got rid of it after he died last year. If it still worked, I could drive into town. I went inside to change my clothes to jeans and a t-shirt and grabbed the keys from the hook in the hall. Tucking my dark hair back in a ponytail, I was ready to go. I just hope no one I know sees me and tells Aunt Rachel. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach, as I climbed behind the wheel of the old Dodge truck. I’m really doing this. I turned the key and the engine choked and died. “No, please don’t do this.” I turned the key again, but this time nothing happened. Slapping the wheel, I let out a groan. The one time I act my age, and this happens. Well I wasn’t a priestess for nothing. Closing my eyes, I placed my hands on the dashboard. The Anuri clan were all able to wield magic, but as priestess I had every spell and ritual stored in my brain. It was just a matter of accessing it. Words flitted by my mind’s eye before a spell appeared. It was in German, but my brain was able to translate it. It was a spell to bring forth a spark. Reciting the spell, I felt my hands heat up as the power left them. After a few seconds, I turned the key again and the engine roared to life. Grinning, I threw it in reverse and backed up. There was a loud thump as I struck something. Slamming on the brakes, I checked the mirrors. Oh Goddess, what have I done? What if it was Aunt Rachel? Leaping from the truck, I stumbled but caught myself. Rushing to the back of the truck, I found a man with dark hair and a beard, lying on the ground. He was unconscious. Kneeling beside him, I shook him. “Hello? Are you…alive?” He wasn’t wearing a shirt and his torso was covered in wounds. His jeans were stained with blood, it looked like someone had tortured him. He’s still breathing. I should get help. As I got to my feet, he let out a groan. “Hey, can you hear me?” I asked. “Where…?” he muttered, squinting at me. “Where are you? On the Tate Farm, just North of Wyattsville.” His lips were cracked and bleeding, he needed water and a doctor. “What’s your name?” I asked. His lips moved, but I could barely hear his response. “David?” He nodded. “Look, I’m going to help you inside and we can get you cleaned up.” “I need…to find…priestess.” I froze. How did he know about me? What if the blood wasn’t his own? I removed the solid silver pendant, a sigil for the clan, from around my neck and laid it on his chest. No reaction. “Not one of them,” he croaked. “Then who are you?” He stared at me for a moment, realization struck him and he reached for my hand. “I’ll show you.” After a moment, I took his hand. Images flooded my mind – a battle, a young boy crying over his mother, vampires ripping people to shreds. The images changed, I saw David here, on this farm the day I received my power. Then he was on the road, then locked in a cell. Tortured, beaten, fed on. A woman, well, a vampire with red hair. The image changed again and I saw myself standing alongside the entire Anuri clan and David as we faced an army of vampires. Yanking my hand away, I fell back onto my butt, breathing hard. “What was that?” I asked. “Our end, if we can’t find a way to stop them.” 1) Tell us about your book
UNDERBITE; is about a vampire that spends most of her time on the grounds of a Florida drive in. She looks about 13 but is in reality over 300. 2) What makes your vampires unique? She entered her undead life by accident but the vampire that turned her decided he liked the idea of having a companion and so taught her everything she needed to know. At the beginning she fed on humans as did her creator who was evil. She managed to kill him and continued on her own until meeting a second mentor who taught her how to live beside humans instead of preying on them. Because of his teaching most of the time she lives on animals instead of humans. Every fifty years or so she has to spend a year or more dining out on people. During these times she makes a point of not actually killing anyone simply taking a small amount of blood from minor criminals then hypnotically ordering them to turn themselves in. There aren’t a lot of tweeny vampires and even fewer vamps that process gator blood with a freezer and a blender to make a nightly slush drink. This she does every night at the drive in while watching the movies and getting lost in a world she can never truly join. 3) If you could have a vampire ability what would it be and why? The living forever part is attractive however the attached limitations would be a bit annoying. To paraphrase Love at First Bite (it’s a Mel Brooks movie, yeah, I’m old) Who wants to spend forever living on a “warm liquid protein diet”? 4) Is your book standalone or part or a series? This is defiantly a stand-alone. There’s space to do more but honestly it doesn’t grab me that way. 5) What is next for you? Roughly a year and a half ago possibly a bit more I figured out how to publish on Amazon. I think what they did was finally simplify the process enough so even I could understand. I have spent that time going through my books and putting them on line. Underbite is just one. Proofing is a brain ache but after over twenty years of getting turned down by one press after another I said that’s it, I’m doing it myself before I die. I have a lot done but there’s still eight more to go. When that’s done, I will finally let myself work on something new. My amazon page is amazon.com/author/tabithabaumander You can find the book there or I think this will take you directly. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RYN8BLS/ Vampires are found in many cultures all over the world, particularly European cultures. Stories date back centuries. Vampires are seen as predators who attack innocent victims in the dead of night and try to drink their blood. Many stories tell of graves being opened up to find the vampire, as this is where they return each night. It is believed that because people did not understand what happens to bodies after they are buried, many corpses were mistaken for vampires when they were exhumed. The bodies would have shown evidence of bloating, blood leaking from orifices and fingernails and hair growing longer. Sure signs that they were feeding on people.
There were many myths about how one could become a vampire including - being jumped over by an animal, a body where a wound was not cleansed, people who rebelled against the church. To stop a vampire, a stake was fashioned out of wood, usually ash, hawthorn or oak, and driven through the heart. In some instances, the head was removed from the body too. What tales of vampires are there in your part of the world? 1. Tell us about your book. I love really big books. One of my favorite books of all time is Anne Rice’s The Witching Hour. She wrote with such detail, I felt like I was standing in the corner of the room, an invisible participant in a theater production that was being played out before me. I doubt my writing would ever be comparable to Anne Rice, but that was my model and inspiration for how I approached my current series, The Medici Warrior Series. While I am an avid reader of all genres, I love the freedom of writing fantasy, where you are not bound by any rules. The Blood Covenant, book one in this six book series, follows the exploits of a vampire dynasty that spans four generations in a multi-genre novel with elements of the paranormal, romance, and historical fiction. The saga explores the roots of the Medici vampire dynasty in Renaissance era Florence, Italy as told through the eyes of the novel’s main protagonist, Shade Medici. Book one begins in current times with Shade, a warrior king who is the sole male heir to the dynasty, and is expected to mate and produce an heir to secure the continuation of the coven. He has waited over 500 years for the right mate when he falls in love with Kate Reese, a mortal girl. Kate is fresh off a broken engagement, and reluctant to open her heart to this stranger. His pursuit is unrelenting, and her curiosity gets the best of her as she lets down her guard, letting him into her life. Their passion for each other is searing, and he ignores the anger of the ruling Council when he pursues a mortal as his future mate. Shade is a complex character, who struggles to control his darker impulses as a vampire, and choses instead to embrace his more human emotions. He must draw Kate into his world, and prepare her for all the changes that will be demanded of her should she choose to bind herself to him through the blood covenant. Their path is filled with personal conflict, as well as with deceit, as others try hard to destroy their union, and Kate sorts through her discovery of the vampire sub-culture, learning what is fact, and what is myth. 2. What makes your vampires unique? I have given you a clue in the description, but primarily, the most unique aspect of the vampires in my series are they are not the “undead.” They did not have to die in order to become vampire, they are born vampire. They describe themselves as immortal, however, they will eventually die of old age and they can also be killed by any means that you can kill a human. While they do have superior strength over humans, and an extremely advanced capability to heal, any injury that would be a mortal wound to a human is also mortal wound to my vampires. Humans can leave silver bullets, stakes through the heart, and all that garlic at home, as I have abandoned much of the traditional vampire mythology and created my own. They still must drink blood to survive, and it is a romance novel, so hot sex is also a requirement. Their need to feed comes mixed with sexual desire. 3. If you could have a vampire’s ability, what would it be? My vampires are each born with one unique gift that aids in their ability to protect themselves, such as day-walker, and dream-walker, but they all had the ability to teleport themselves through space. I would love to have this ability to teleport, to simply envision where I wanted to be, and go there. No packing, no TSA lines, no cancelled or delayed flights, no cramped seating on the airplanes, so teleporting would be my desired vampire super-power! 4. What is next for you? Since all six books of The Medici Warrior Series have been written and are with my publisher, waiting to be slotted into a publishing schedule, I am currently working on another paranormal romance series called The Bohannon Witch Series. Book one is Rhiannon’s Circle. Unlike the vampire novels, where the males were dominant, I am making the female witches more dominant, and more powerful than the male witches. Let’s see what happens when we put the women in charge! 1) Tell us about your book.
CHILD OF BLACKWEN is the first of the Artemis Ravenwing Novels! It is a young adult coming of age fantasy series about a young dhampir, Artemis Ravenwing, who was orphaned at an early age and raised by elves. Her journey begins with a ragtag group of misfits that includes a seasoned elven warrior, a longtime vassal of the goddesses, a wayward elven mage, and a few outcast vampires and dhampirs! Here is the synopsis of book one as well: The epic fantasy novel Child of Blackwen is a coming-of-age adventure story about the young dhampir Artemis in the mystical world of Arrygn. Born of a human and a vampire, Artemis was raised among the elves of Ellewynth by her mother’s friends Shadow, an elven soldier, and Talisa, a witch. An outcast in elven society, Artemis is protected by the Elders of the Woodland Realm because her mother, the vampire Tamina Ravenwing, once served them. As Artemis struggles to overcome prejudice, she must also learn to control her innate thirst for blood. Her efforts are made all the more difficult when Shadow and Talisa are called to serve in the eight-year-long war against the dragons. Just after they return, Artemis begins dreaming her mother’s memories, only to discover that her guardians are plagued with the same dreams. This, along with the mysterious murders in the Woodland Realm, leads Artemis to learn the shocking truth about her mother’s death: the unsavory woman in the dreams is none other than Tamina’s younger sister, Arlina. Artemis poses a threat to the madwoman Arlina, usurper of the throne of Blackwen City—and the vampire will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat. 2) What makes your vampires unique? I have rarely seen stories about dhampirs, which in myth are half vampire, half human hybrids. I first got introduced to such creatures by way of Vampire Hunter D, Castlevania's Alucard (the video games from my childhood), and through Barb and J.C. Hendee's Noble Dead saga (great reads if you're looking for a fun series!). I wanted to make a story that showcases their uniqueness, particularly showing the struggle of how to blend into not one, but both of their worlds. It is always said that dhampirs are always stronger than their pure vampire counterparts, and I follow that path, but it comes at a price for Artemis...to the point where she encounters someone to help try to bind her two halves together because of how dangerous her heritage really is. The "pure-blooded" vampires in my world are called "Full-bloods"; the villain, Arlina, has the notion that only full-bloods should exist and that everyone else must bow down to her and her race. I also showcase vampire mages; my character, Karesu, has a specialty with runes and charms, and also one more old magic thanks to his bloodline, but that won't be revealed until later in book three! 3) If you could have a vampire ability what would it be and why? In my series, the dhampirs have wings; I would love to be able to have that ability. I especially enjoy traveling and the ability of flight always appealed to me in that notion. If I had to choose a second power from my novels, I enjoy Karesu's ability to create charms! He has a really cool cross earring that he made to help keep the spirits he hears and sees at bay. 4) Is your book standalone or part or a series? It is part of a series! I'm not sure how many novels it will be yet, but I am currently working on CHAMPIONS OF ARRYGN, which is book three of the Artemis Ravenwing novels. 5) What is next for you? I'm hoping to finish CHAMPIONS OF ARRYGN by the end of this year; it has taken me quite a while, but the current draft is looking more to what I initially envisioned. Besides writing, I am also a cosplayer! I network with cosplayers and authors during each con trip I take. By D.J. Doyle Three days ago, my life was normal. I got up, went to work, came home, ate dinner and cuddled with my heavily pregnant wife. Now? Well now my world has crumbled all around me, and my life a mess, no, a torment. Three nights ago, my wife, my college sweetheart, went into early labour. It was the middle of the night when I awoke to hear screams coming from the bathroom. I leapt from the bed and raced to her; my heart skipped a hundred beats. I found her on the floor in a pool of blood crying for our baby’s life. It took twenty minutes for the ambulance to arrive, by then contractions had started and they were seven minutes apart. My wife, Diane, was rushed through for surgery by a large team of doctors and nurses. A blood soaked nightgown was the last image I saw before she disappeared through the double doors, it haunted me every minute. They wouldn’t let me in to be with her… she must’ve have been so afraid. I paced the corridors for three hours, tears stained my cheeks and snot gathered on my sleeves. Finally, a nurse poked her head out and told me to go to the waiting room for the doctor, who would be with me in a minute. As I sat, my knees trembled uncontrollably, I heard the handle turning and jumped to attention. I must’ve looked a mess; teary eyes, runny nose, with a shorts and shirt combo. “Mr. Campbell. I’m truly sorry. I don't know how to tell you this.” He fiddled with his pen and stood open-mouthed. “Just spit it out. Is it our baby? Did he not make it?” “It’s more complicated than that. Your wife had internal bleeding and a high fever. There were complications with the delivery and your baby was too long without oxygen.” He put his hand on my shoulder and looked me straight in the eyes. “I’m sorry, Mr. Campbell. Both your wife and baby didn’t make it.” “What? No! This can’t be happening. This is some sort of nightmare,” I said as I swiped his arm away, I didn’t want his sympathy, I wanted to see my family. They allowed me to see them once they had cleaned them up, my darling Diane and my little boy, Evan. They looked asleep, but when I touched their skin, I could tell there was no life in them. They were cold to touch. It was then my world began to fade away in front of my eyes, and my soul left blank. Nothing, empty. I watched the mahogany box which contained my future be lowered into a six-foot deep abyss; two empty vessels, one cradling the other, sealed away for eternity. Family and friends left, comforting one another, to the wake in our local public house, one we hadn’t visited in a year or so, not since we were trying to have a family. It was just me, the corpses, and the descending sun at the graveyard. I fell to the ground and rested my head on the soft grass beside the deep hole. I asked them to wait until tomorrow to fill it in; I wanted to be as close to Diane and little Evan for as long as I could. I stayed until dark and fell asleep. Hours later, I awoke with the sound of a voice singing. A soft melodic tone that I pictured dancing with the dust in the cool breeze. I opened my eyes and eerily realised the dim light of the moon had cast a glow on the headstones and monuments in the cemetery. In between a row of recently deceased, not too far away, stood a woman dressed in a white gown which appeared old and raggy. Her dark hair was long and silky with a tattered white flower crown. It was as if she floated towards me. “I feel your pain,” she whispered. “What? You wouldn’t understand.” “I have lost love before. I have lost children, too. I do feel your pain.” Her voice carried a soothing tone that made my bottom lip quiver and tears flow from my eyes. “I can reunite you. If you want,” she stated. “If only that were possible.” I sat up and glared at this mysterious woman who believed she could bring back the dead. “It is. I can make it possible. For you.” “Are you a witch?” I asked with a sarcastic tone. “Ha! Don’t insult me. I am much more than that. I am a friend of death, I can control it. Don’t you want to see them again?” Visions of Diane, with her large stomach, painting Evan’s room together last month, invaded my thoughts. She flicked the bristles of the brush at me and screamed laughing when I came towards her with a roller full of paint. She begged me not to paint her. When I put the roller behind me, she shoved the paintbrush into my face and wiggled before bursting out laughing and apologising. I let her away with it because of her condition, otherwise I would have chased her around the house until she was covered head to toe with the blue coloured paint. An owl hooted close by and brought me to my senses. “Who or what are you?” “I am a Dearg-Dul, and all I ask is for one kiss, and I can reunite you with your family?” I had no idea what a Dearg-Dul was, yet the name seemed familiar in the back of my mind. Although she was mesmerising, I had just lost the love of my life. “My wife is just there, why would you expect me to kiss you?” She started to sing again, this song was different from the last one. The one before sounded like a song of woe, this was one of enchantment, with a melody that enticed my senses, and made me forget my emotional state. My sadness. My grief. The feeling of being lost in this world. “What is that song?” “It is an old song to give comfort to grieving souls. Did it work?” “Yes, I would love to forget my pain, but a song doesn’t last forever.” “This one can. You don’t have to be in pain, come kiss me and you will see,” she said seductively. Her tale of forgotten pain was too enticing. “It still doesn’t feel right for me to kiss you with my wife and child in the mud.” “Do not wallow in pity. Let me kiss you and you will not have any guilt.” She came closer and lifted her hand towards my face. Her sky blue eyes flickered in the moonlight, they were practically glowing. The touch from her pale hand was cold yet soothing. ‘What if she could unite me with my wife and son, wasn’t it worth the risk? I would do anything to hold them both in my arms.' She spun me around and swayed side to side as she hummed another song; we were dancing. It felt like I was moving on a cloud. Her pale pink lips closed in, I closed my eyes and smelt her aroma. Her breath burnt my nose, like hot chilli. When our lips touched, I had an out of body experience, but not a typical one. I was back in school, and we were learning about Samhain and Halloween tradition. My teacher listed out characters from Irish folklore, and the Dearg-Dul was one of them. ‘What was it about the Dearg-Dul? Dearg...Dearg…was it a colour? Yes, that’s it. The colour red. For blood!’ My body quivered as her lips moved across my face and onto my neck, still kissing the stubble. I didn’t feel her teeth sink in at first, not until she started to suck my blood; then it felt like the very essence of my soul was being drained from my body. I screamed, but as she drank my blood and moaned with delight, my voice grew weaker and weaker until a little gurgle came out. My skin turned a pale grey and the other layers crinkled, yet she continued to feast upon me. Black and white spots appeared in front of my eyes, and then everything went dark. I opened my eyes again to see my wife and baby smiling at me, with a bright light behind them, they looked angelic and perfect. I returned a smile as I never felt happier in my life and reached for her hand… Diane’s face changed, her brows lifted in shock and she turned to shield her and Evan. A dark force grabbed me, its touch burnt my skin, and it tugged me away from the arms of my love. I turned to see a beast with fire in his eyes and an evil grin. It growled and pulled me into a black rift; beyond were the depths of hell. The last sound I heard was the Dearg-Dul laughing at my tortured soul.

Excerpt:
She left the bathroom and headed to the kitchen. The criminal investigation team was outside, and some tension left her shoulders. A few dishes lay on the counter, so she put them away, her mind numbing. It was pointless since she wouldnât be living here anymore, but the act of doing something familiar let her mind relax for a few seconds.
Iâm leaving this place. Thomas wonât be with me anymore.
Heâd been stressed after heâd got that phone call and she was too late to find out what had bothered him. Sheâd never be able to help him deal with whatever it was.
âWhat are you doing?â Kai asked.
She cleared her throat to make sure her voice wouldnât crack too much. âPutting my dishes away.â
Kaiâs arms wrapped around her from behind and she squeezed the plate in her hand, holding her breath. Somehow, affection from him was worse than if he held a knife to her throat.
His hand rested on her chest. âStrange how love is all inside a humanâs mind, and yet your heart is the organ aching.â
She tore herself away from him. âI wouldnât expect a demon to understand.â
âWhat makes you think Iââ
âLook, I donât want to talk about it with you. Iâve suffered enough.â The plate in her hand shook, and her fingers cramped as she tried to hold it steady.
âNo, you have not suffered enough. Youâd have chosen to die if you knew whatâs coming.â
âDonât talk as if you know how I feel, you fucking demon.â Her tears cooled the heated flush of her rage, and she hurled the plate at him.
Kai lifted his hand and the crockery shattered into fine dust at his feet. His eyes locked onto hers, and without a word, he grabbed her wrist and dragged her outside.
âWhat are you doing? Where are you taking me?â Her voice rose higher as she tried tugging away from him.
He stopped near the edge of the woods and faced her, his glowing eyes silencing her questions. His hand rose and black smoke seeped from the ground, sticking to everything it touched. Kai pulled her against him and clicked his fingers.
The smoke seeped into the surface of all that it covered, and her eyes widened. The plants and flowers withered and died, everything turned ashen as though burned. He went back to the house and she followed, glancing back at the destroyed area of the forest. Though no words were exchanged, she knew he had shown her what he could do as a warning. He wouldnât just threaten her next time she attacked him.
Going back to the master bedroom, she grabbed a bag out of her closet to pack. Thomasâ clothes hung in front of her, and a lump in her throat constricted her breathing. She swallowed hard, trying to make it go away. Grabbing hold of a sleeve, she waited for Thomas to come up behind her to get ready for work. But no one was in the house except for her, and the demon.
About the Author:
M. A. Fréchette writes the darker side of romance.
Being an extremist, she loves both the dark aspects of life and everything sweet. All her stories are either set in Canada where she lives or in alternate worlds she made up while living within her imagination. When not writing, she thinks of the next scene or plot while enjoying her work as a cover designer. Although she has a fascination for monsters, with a bachelor degree in criminology, she understands thereâs no need to create the paranormal; humans are capable of inflicting nightmares of their own.

1) Tell us about your book "Life Signs" is the second book in my "Panic! Horror In Space" series, which is available in all the usual ebook formats. It's horror-sci-fi, as you may tell from the title, and coincidentally, I've actually just revamped (bad pun, sorry!) the series with new covers and formatting, and it was updated online only yesterday (June 06, 2019). "Panic! Horror In Space" is a series of horror misadventures in deep space with the crew of the I.S.S. Mercury - which, of all the starships in the elite Terran Space Fleet, is probably the unluckiest ship in history! Not once, not twice, but many times over, the same hapless crew on a supposed voyage of deep-space exploration – give or take a few dozen casualties, stumble into the weird, wake the creepy and trip over the downright terrifying and possibly even supernatural. "Life Signs" is over 64000 words long, and like book 1 in the same series ("Static"), is divided into parts - i.e. "Part 1: Miora", "Part 2: Lange's Legacy" and "Part 3: The Big Rain"). Each part is essentially a standalone story inside the book, using the same characters and different settings, events and story fitting into a broader storyline. Think of each part as a TV episode. Typically - at least so far, the characters in Panic! have faced paranormal elements such as zombies, ghosts, haunted items, cursed items, and "Lange's Legacy" (part 2 in "Life Signs") is the first time I brought vampires into it! "Lange's Legacy", the story I'm submitting, is 39559 words long, and if you're looking for both volumes of "Panic! Horror In Space", you can find them on my shop site http://www.christinaengela.net where they're available in pdf, epub AND mobi format. 2) What makes your vampires unique? Vampires have been a long-time fascination of mine, since I was a child - in fact, the very first story I tried to write as a kid, younger than eight years, was about a vampire! It was awful, but very sweet and naive - and short too, being only about three sentences long - typed on my mother's old manual typewriter! Having done extensive research into the fictional vampire as well as the modern day vampire subculture which extends around the world, I based my vampire characters a little more on the real-world subculture type of vampire, while adding a few of the fictional characteristics in the fashion of a light sprinkling of herbs and spices over a naughty dish! My vampires aren't undead; they don't melt in sunlight - it weakens them. Religious symbols, salt, silver and garlic have no effect on them - and unless they are pretty badly mangled up - say, by a wannabe Van Helsing trying out his new bazooka, they can live indefinitely, forever young. The vampires in my stories ("Life Signs", "Prodigal Sun" and "High Steaks" to name a few) live in general society, but also have roles in an extensive underground society reserved for vampires and their close friends - the donors who voluntarily help feed them. Blood banks feature strongly in their food chain. They tend to frown on fellow vampires 'hunting' for a meal. Since I write primarily science fiction, I feel this also lends another unique facet to my vampire characters. 3) If you could have a vampire ability what would it be and why? To 'glamor' people - c'mon, who wouldn't want to be able to influence others? I'd make a better world, given half a chance. ;) 4) Is your book standalone or part or a series? "Life Signs" is book 2 of my "Panic! Horror In Space" series, and "Lange's Legacy" is part 2 inside "Life Signs". 5) What is next for you? I have a lot of irons in my fire! LOL! At this point, I have three series of books ("Galaxii", "Quantum", and "Panic! Horror In Space") - not including the short story collection ("Space Sucks!") and each of these has incomplete titles I'm still working on in turn! I'm an indie author who self-publishes, I do all my own editing, formatting and design, as well as marketing and promotion... believe me, that's a full, heaped plate! In the times when I'm not working or writing, or marketing, I'm looking at ways to improve or expand - I'd love to put my books out as audiobooks, but living in South Africa really is an obstacle to most things! Recording is expensive, and everything out there either costs an arm and a leg due to the USD-ZAR exchange rate (now at R15 to $1, and looking to get worse), or South Africa's medieval publishing and banking industries don't support. Of course, getting a couple of major publishing or movie deals might make most of my dreams come true. Meanwhile, I keep writing - writing keeps me positive and sane. ...Although, as an afterthought, probably more the former than the latter. About the Author:
Christina Engela is one of South Africa's most unique and skilled storytellers, having written 13 novellas in three science fiction series, and also several non-fiction titles. Best known for her realistic characterization and for casting fully-fleshed-out LGBT characters in leading roles, Christina brings her wealth of personal experience to each of her stories. With several new offerings already in the pipeline, including several standalone titles, 2020 is bound to be a busy year for her fans! You can find out more on ChristinaEngela.net 1) Tell us about your book Made for Her is part of S. E. Smith’s The Worlds of Magic, New Mexico. Magic is a small town of paranormal beings in the New Mexico desert. When Mikhail and Donalda (Donnie) first encounter each other, Donnie is on the run from her former boss—the same man responsible for having Mikhail turned into a vampire centuries before. Mikhail would definitely like to drop a load of cold revenge all over the guy’s head. If helping the human woman, Donnie, thwarts his nemesis, he’s all in. What neither of them expect is to discover their own brand of magic along the way. 2) What makes your vampires unique? Mikhail doesn’t sparkle? Okay, okay, that’s not the answer you’re looking for, is it? The most unique thing about Mikhail is the way he’s held onto his humanity. He is a “made” vampire, and it was against his will. Because of this, he lost what he held most dear—his family. It’d be easy for him to give in to the darkness of his inner vampire, but he manages to keep himself above that. 3) If you could have a vampire ability what would it be and why? There are two abilities I’d love to have. First, vampire eyesight. I’ve worn corrective lenses since the age of four, and I’d love to be able to see everything without fumbling for my glasses, or worrying about changing my contacts. The second would be vampire speed. I’m the mom of five kids, and vampire speed would come in very handy. 4) Is your book standalone or part or a series? Both! <g> Technically, its storyline is a standalone, but the book is part of The Worlds of Magic, New Mexico (which has many stories about vampires by other authors, as well as shifters, dragons, aliens, etc. Some characters make cameo appearances in other authors’ books, too!) So far, Made for Her is the only story I’ve written for the collection, but I do have another spin-off story percolating in my head, I just haven’t had time to get to it. (See question 5 for further explanation.) My next story will feature a different couple, but Donnie and Mikhail may make an appearance. <wink> 5) What is next for you? I’m pretty sure there’s no short answer to this question, but I’ll try. I primarily write sci-fi romance, and since 2016 my focus has been on my Prophecy series. (Blue aliens, giant green aliens, humans, an Earth invasion, the Atlantis myth, preternatural abilities, soul mates, and of course, an ancient alien prophecy are featured. Oh, and romances with happily ever afters attached.) In this universe, I’m currently revising a short story for release in Sept., editing a novella, and writing book four (which is a time travel!) Hopefully by the end of next year there will be three more shiny new additions to the Prophecy series. None will include vampires, but I hope that won’t stop you from checking them out! And this is why my next Magic, NM story hasn’t been done yet!
