Haunted Houses are a popular idea in both books and films. The idea that ghosts can be contained inside a house, left to torment the people living there has been the subject of some of the most popular horror movies in recent years. The most popular being The Haunting of Hill House which is available on Netflix.
Based on the book by Shirley Jackson, this version features a family who move into Hill House to renovate it and sell it on. The house itself is an entity which feeds on souls and forces people to kill themselves or others.
The Amityville movies and more recently The Conjuring, all feature haunted houses. While the market for horror is smaller than for other genres, it is always a trope that has remained popular. Fear of the unknown increases when the unknown is in your home with you.
